Each month, we share stories from ShelterBox and beyond that remind us what’s possible when people come together. This October, we’re celebrating remarkable fundraising achievements, inspiring personal challenges and communities rebuilding after disaster and conflict. Alongside some uplifting stories from around the world, these moments show the many different ways people are creating positive change.

Stronger shelters and brighter futures in Somalia
In Somalia, 230 shelters have now been completed, with families beginning to move into safer and more secure homes. Savings made within the project mean future shelters will include corrugated iron roofing, known to be cooler and more resilient in harsh UV and high winds, helping create more durable living spaces for communities affected by conflict and the climate crisis.

Preparedness pays off in the Philippines
More than 2,300 families affected by the June earthquake in the Philippines have now received shelter support, cash assistance and essential household items.
Thanks to pre-positioned aid in Cebu and strong local partnerships, teams were able to respond quickly with shelter kits, tarpaulins, blankets, solar lamps and kitchen sets, helping families begin rebuilding their homes and lives.

Supporting recovery in Mozambique
Recovery efforts are gathering pace in Mozambique following severe flooding earlier this year. Local artisans and community activists have already taken part in Shelter Principles Training, learning practical techniques to support safer home repairs.
With households identified and preparations underway, shelter repairs are expected to begin for 240 families as communities continue rebuilding and strengthening their resilience.

Strengthening shelter standards in Venezuela
ShelterBox and Rotary partners in Venezuela have developed new shelter designs and construction guidance to support earthquake-affected communities. The approach will help improve the quality and consistency of transitional shelters, with the potential to influence shelter standards beyond ShelterBox-supported sites. Together, ShelterBox and Rotary plan to support more than 1,100 households with 650 shelters and essential household items.

Keeping a centuries-old tradition alive in Lebanon
In the mountains above Beirut, the Naffah family is preserving a craft that has been passed down for more than 300 years. As Lebanon‘s last remaining church bell makers, they continue to supply bells across the Middle East and beyond, with the next generation already preparing to take over the foundry. Their story is a reminder of the importance of preserving skills, traditions and cultural heritage for future generations.
