We chose stories that focus on people; modern literary fiction, autobiographies, and short stories from all over the world.
These books share under-represented stories from cultures and communities that don’t often appear on the bestseller list.
What sets these books apart? The selections are influenced by the experiences of people who have been supported through ShelterBox’s disaster relief work.

People like Zara, who we provided with emergency shelter in Chad after she fled violence in her home country of Sudan. When they first arrived, Zara and her family struggled in an overcrowded refugee camp. They had to travel 10 to 20km for water, and Zara was unable to work to provide income for her family.
But thanks to our global supporters, ShelterBox was able to provide Zara with a semi-durable shelter that meant her family could have privacy and security.
Read Zara's storyAs soon as they told me that I would have a house, I was so happy. I didn’t imagine that I would have a house, but then they brought the materials, and they built the house for us.
