Around the world, communities are facing conflict, climate disasters, and energy poverty — but they’re also finding strength, support, and solutions.
From solar-powered villages in India to flood recovery in Pakistan, and new homes in Chad to clean energy progress across Africa, these stories show how shelter and innovation can spark hope. Here’s a look at how people are rebuilding, reconnecting, and lighting up their futures — together.

Hawa’s new shelter in Chad
A year after fleeing conflict in Sudan, Hawa now lives in a semi-durable shelter in Chad. Her new home has brought safety, comfort, and dignity.
“Before, I woke up many times at night to check on my children. Now, they wake me up for school.”
With a lockable door, water, and electricity, Hawa feels secure and hopeful. Her neighbours admire the shelter and wish for the same support.
“We suffered, but now we feel safe. I hope others can be helped too.”

Diwali special: lighting up India with solar power
Across India’s remotest corners, where electricity is scarce, seven people are turning sunlight into opportunity. From Manipur’s hills to Maharashtra’s forests, they’re bringing solar energy to villages without power. Whether it’s a student designing bulbs that work during power cuts or a woman breaking barriers as a “solar engineer,” each story shines with resilience and innovation.
“Even with the power cut,” says Uday Bhatia, “there will still be light.”
This Diwali, their work celebrates the power of community, innovation – and light.

Pakistan: Supporting after the floods
ShelterBox and Islamic Relief Pakistan have supported thousands of people affected by severe flooding across Pakistan. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, emergency tents, tarpaulins, and thermal blankets are helping families stay warm as temperatures drop.
In eastern Pakistan, where floodwaters linger, temporary shelters allow families to stay close to their damaged homes while they begin to rebuild. Blankets, mattresses, and solar lights bring comfort, while mosquito nets and hygiene kits help protect against disease — especially vital during the dengue outbreak in Punjab.

Clean energy in Africa
Nearly 600 million Africans, half the continent’s population, are without electricity, largely because of the continent’s limited distribution network, and the continent makes up the vast majority of those worldwide without electricity access. The EU has pledge $600 million to support clean energy projects in Africa.
From Chad to India, Pakistan to across Africa, these stories show how shelter and energy can transform lives. Whether it’s rebuilding after disaster, lighting up homes with solar power, or creating longer-term solutions for displaced families, the impact is clear: hope grows where support reaches.
